SKIN BOOSTERS - INJECTABLE 'MOISTURISERS'

Skinboosters also known as 'Injectable moisturisers' are usually lightweight gels made of (or at least containing a good deal of) Hyaluronic acid - a substance that is naturally produced by the skin and which has the ability to hold many times its own weight in water. Injecting this gel just below the surface of the skin gives long-lasting hydration by replenishing and hydrating your skin from within. Injectable skin boosters improve the density of the skin, hide dark under eyes, diminish fine lines and give the complexion a youthful glow. Unlike a dermal filler, these treatments are not designed to create volume or change the shape of your face - the effect is more subtle and is suitable for all. The resulting effects are younger looking, radiant skin while collagen production tackles the signs of aging.

WHAT DO SKIN BOOSTERS DO?

Imagine that you could place a layer of long-lasting moisturiser beneath your skin, so that it stayed there for months on end, delivering its benefits continuously. In a nutshell, that is what injectable moisturiser is doing. This extra dose of hydration has the effect of plumping up the skin and helping it look healthier and fresher.

Some brands of injectable moisturiser (such as Profhilo) are classed as ‘biostimulators’ because their presence in the skin has been proven to allow the skin to regenerate itself and grow more skin-supporting collagen and elastin.

ARE SKIN BOOSTERS SAFE?

Yes. Skin Boosters are incredibly safe (compared to their older sister Dermal Fillers) and have been available for 15 years without any significant problems reported for this type of treatment. Clients are likely to experience some redness after the treatment due to the small injections, and as always there is a risk of some swelling and small bruising with any treatment that involves needles.

DO SKIN BOOSTERS WORK?

Yes, injectable moisturisers work remarkably well. They make the skin better hydrated and healthier which in turn makes the skin look better too.

HOW LONG DO SKIN BOOSTERS TAKE TO WORK?

It can take up to eight weeks to see the full results of your skin booster treatment however some clients report seeing visible results much sooner. Immediately afterwards you are likely to experience some redness at the treatment site from the injection marks, which will calm down over the next 12 hours.

HOW DO SKIN BOOSTERS WORK?

In order for skin boosters to work they are placed with small injections beneath the skin’s surface. Once the product has settled, it will remain in the skin for around 30 days. During that time, the hyaluronic acid molecules in the gel attract and retain water beneath the skin. Having this extra hyaluronic acid and the extra hydration that it delivers has been shown in studies to improve the ‘extracellular matrix’ of the skin. If you think of the skin cells being stacked like bricks in a wall, the extracellular matrix is the mortar or cement that surrounds all those bricks. And improving the extracellular matrix encourages the growth of new collagen and elastin within the skin, which in turn, over the next few months, makes the skin firmer and bouncier. Even though the original gel which is injected does not last beyond 30 days in the skin, the knock-on effects of the extra hydration and collagen and elastin stimulation that it provides last up to 6-9 months.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SKIN BOOSTERS?

What most clients notice after skin boosters is the way that their skin feels very well hydrated. They give terrific results targeting older, drier skin making it feel feel fresher, softer, and more springy. Because of the extra collagen and elastin that skin boosters generate, they leave skin stronger and firmer. Also, having the extra hydration beneath the surface plumps up the skin cells. This makes the skin look smoother, and this smoothness reflects the light better, so the skin looks healthier and fresher. In this way, the treatments manage to give back to older, drier skin some of the radiance and glow that gets lost from the skin with age.

These treatments can also soften fine lines in the skin and improve acne scarring, while some types of skin boosters such as Profhilo have been shown to improve the firmness and tightness of the skin where it is injected.

SKIN BOOSTERS & DERMAL FILLER: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

Even though Skin boosters are made of hyaluronic acid (which is what most facial fillers are made from) they do not give a plumping or filling effect in the face. Skin boosters come in a very runny fluid gel, so they do not add any volume to the face. Also, they are injected only just beneath the surface of the skin whereas fillers are placed more deeply into the face (for example to add structure to the jaw or chin, or to replace lost volume in the cheeks, lips or temples). Skin boosters are a different type of product, and are used differently and give a different effect, even though, like fillers, they are made from hyaluronic acid.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT BRANDS OF SKIN BOOSTERS?

We use two different brands of skin boosters called Profhilo and Jalupro which work in slightly different ways, though they are in effect doing similar things. The one that is most talked about at the moment is Profhilo, which is known a 'Bio-Remodeller' achieving amazing all over restorative results. Jalupro combines hyaluronic acid with a mixture of amino acids and is known as a 'Bio-Revitaliser' that is better for targeting smaller specific areas like under the eyes. Both of these products are made from hyaluronic acid gel. The main differences between them are in the protocol for injecting them, the number of injections and treatments needed and the length of time that they last in the skin.

Profhilo

With one of the highest product concentrations of Hyaluronic Acid in the industry, Profhilo not only boosts and hydrates the skin, it can also remodel sagging tissue. Acting as a high dose moisturising treatment, Profhilo's hydrating effect works as Hyaluronic Acid attracts water into the dermis. Prolonged stimulating activity in the dermis of cell receptors counteracts skin laxity and restores firmness by creating more collagen and elastin.

  • Boosts collagen & elastin

  • Boosts skin hydration

  • Improves crepey thin neck skin

  • Improves wrinkly cheeks

  • Remodels sagging skin tissue

It is recommend to have 2 sessions 4 weeks apart and then routine top ups every 6 months to maintain your effects. If skin problems are severe, the third session could be done 8 weeks after the second session.

Jalupro

Jalupro is a dermal bio-revitaliser for improving skin texture, minimising skin ageing by minimising the evidence of fine lines and wrinkles and brightens the skin. Jalupro is also made with hyaluronic acid, but with added amino acids amplifying the collagen and elastin-boosting effects of the hyaluronic acid. There are two types of Jalupro: Classic & HMW.

Classic is more suited to the younger person who is showing the first signs of skin ageing or to prevent them.

HMW contains more Hyaluronic Acid which is suitable for the older person and provides scaffolding for more aged skin, helps with deeper lines requiring more moisture and for deeper scars.

  • Creates a smoother more even complexion

  • Reduces dark under eye circles

  • Restores skin radiance and firmness

  • Improves fine lines and wrinkles

  • Prevents and reduces sagging skin tissue

  • Improves appearance of stretch marks & scars

It is recommend to have Jalupro classic over 2-3 sessions spaced 7-10 days apart whereas Jalupro HMW is recommended over 2 sessions spaced 14-21 days apart. Routine top ups every 4-6 months are required to maintain your effects.

HOW LONG DO SKIN BOOSTERS LAST?

Skin boosters typically last around 6 months after the first 'loading' sessions and we recommend having routine top up appointments to continue enjoying the amazing benefits skin boosters offer.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO SKIN BOOSTERS?

As with all procedures involving needles, there will be some redness around the injection sites. This is more noticeable the more injections you have in one sitting. There is also a less likely risk of bruising, although again the likelihood increases the more injections you have. With procedures involving fewer injections, you’ll likely experience some swelling around the injection sites, like a bite or sting.

Other than that, there are no associated side effects.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HAVE A SKIN BOOSTER?

This depends on the areas you are having treated however most treatments can be done in 10-15 minutes.

Having a treatment with skin boosters is mostly a matter of tolerating the small injections that are necessary to place the hyaluronic acid-based gel beneath the skin. If you are sensitive to injections we recommend having some numbing cream applied which will add on a further 15 minutes to your treatment time.

WHERE CAN SKIN BOOSTERS BE USED ON THE BODY?

Most people start by having skin boosters on the face however you can enjoy the benefits of skin boosters on the whole body. Other areas that respond well to treatment with injectable moisturisers include the neck, the chest and the hands. It is really good for those crepey areas where the skin often looks dry and where wrinkles and fine lines become more obvious. We can also use these treatments to firm up sagging skin on the upper arms aka ‘bingo wings', above the knee of even to treat dry skin on the tops of the feet.

DO SKIN BOOSTERS HURT?

It varies, depending on the treatment area you are having as some areas may be more sensitive than others. Some areas or the Profhilo treatment is very quick it is not really necessary to need anaesthetic numbing cream beforehand, but if you are particularly sensitive or going to have a whole face-full of tiny injections, I would probably suggest applying some numbing cream before we start. The needles used are very small and fine which keeps the discomfort to a minimum. You may feel a little sting as the injection goes in but it is very tolerable.

CAN YOU HAVE SKIN BOOSTERS IF YOU HAVE BOTOX / FILLER

Yes, injectable skin boosters actually work very well alongside treatments such as Botox or Dermal Filler because their focus is on skin conditioning rather than relaxing muscles or adding volume. You can actually combine Botulinum Toxin with Jalupro to create the aptly named 'Jalutox' to get the benefits from both without having two sets of injections.

CAN YOU HAVE SKIN BOOSTERS IF YOU HAVE LASER / RF

I wouldn’t combine skin boosters with laser or radiofrequency (RF), as these treatments heat your skin and although there are no case studies it may effect the skin boosters longevity if it is heated and destroyed. This can be avoided by doing the treatments the other way round. Have the laser or radiofrequency first and once that has settled down, go for the injectable skin boosters after.
