Skin Boosters also known as 'Injectable moisturisers' are usually lightweight gels made of (or at least containing a good deal of) Hyaluronic acid - a substance that is naturally produced by the skin and has the ability to hold many times its own weight in water.
Injecting this gel just below the surface of the skin gives long-lasting hydration by replenishing and hydrating your skin from within. Injectable skin boosters improve the density of the skin, hide dark under eyes, diminish fine lines and give the complexion a youthful glow.

WHAT DO SKIN BOOSTERS DO? Imagine that you could place a layer of long-lasting moisturiser beneath your skin, so that it stayed there for months on end, delivering its benefits continuously. In a nutshell, that is what injectable moisturiser is doing. This extra dose of hydration has the effect of plumping up the skin and helping it look healthier and fresher. ​ Some brands of injectable moisturiser (such as Profhilo) are classed as ‘biostimulators’ because their presence in the skin has been proven to allow the skin to regenerate itself and grow more skin-supporting collagen and elastin. ​ ​
HOW DO SKIN BOOSTERS WORK? In order for skin boosters to work they are placed with small injections beneath the skin’s surface. Once the product has settled, it will remain in the skin for around 30 days. During that time, the hyaluronic acid molecules in the gel attract and retain water beneath the skin. Having this extra hyaluronic acid and the extra hydration that it delivers has been shown in studies to improve the ‘extracellular matrix’ of the skin. If you think of the skin cells being stacked like bricks in a wall, the extracellular matrix is the mortar or cement that surrounds all those bricks. And improving the extracellular matrix encourages the growth of new collagen and elastin within the skin, which in turn, over the next few months, makes the skin firmer and bouncier. Even though the original gel which is injected does not last beyond 30 days in the skin, the knock-on effects of the extra hydration and collagen and elastin stimulation that it provides last up to 6-9 months. ​ ​
ARE SKIN BOOSTERS SAFE? Yes. Skin Boosters are incredibly safe (compared to their older sister Dermal Fillers) and have been available for 15 years without any significant problems reported for this type of treatment. Clients are likely to experience some redness after the treatment due to the small injections, and as always there is a risk of some swelling and small bruising with any treatment that involves needles. ​ ​
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SKIN BOOSTERS? What most clients notice after skin boosters is the way that their skin feels very well hydrated. They give terrific results targeting older, drier skin making it feel feel fresher, softer, and more springy. Because of the extra collagen and elastin that skin boosters generate, they leave skin stronger and firmer. Also, having the extra hydration beneath the surface plumps up the skin cells. This makes the skin look smoother, and this smoothness reflects the light better, so the skin looks healthier and fresher. In this way, the treatments manage to give back to older, drier skin some of the radiance and glow that gets lost from the skin with age. ​ These treatments can also soften fine lines in the skin and improve acne scarring, while some types of skin boosters such as Profhilo have been shown to improve the firmness and tightness of the skin where it is injected. ​ ​
HOW LONG DO SKIN BOOSTERS TAKE TO WORK?​ It can take up to eight weeks to see the full results of your skin booster treatment however some clients report seeing visible results much sooner. Immediately afterwards you are likely to experience some redness at the treatment site from the injection marks, which will calm down over the next 12 hours. ​
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HAVE A SKIN BOOSTER? This depends on the areas you are having treated however most treatments can be done in 10-15 minutes. ​ Having a treatment with skin boosters is mostly a matter of tolerating the small injections that are necessary to place the hyaluronic acid-based gel beneath the skin. If you are sensitive to injections we recommend having some numbing cream applied which will add on a further 15 minutes to your treatment time. ​ ​
WHERE CAN SKIN BOOSTERS BE USED ON THE BODY? Most people start by having skin boosters on the face however you can enjoy the benefits of skin boosters on the whole body. Other areas that respond well to treatment with injectable moisturisers include the neck, the chest and the hands. It is really good for those crepey areas where the skin often looks dry and where wrinkles and fine lines become more obvious. We can also use these treatments to firm up sagging skin on the upper arms aka ‘bingo wings', above the knee of even to treat dry skin on the tops of the feet. ​ ​
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO SKIN BOOSTERS? As with all procedures involving needles, there will be some redness around the injection sites. This is more noticeable the more injections you have in one sitting. There is also a less likely risk of bruising, although again the likelihood increases the more injections you have. With procedures involving fewer injections, you’ll likely experience some swelling around the injection sites, like a bite or sting. Other than that, there are no associated side effects. ​ ​
DO SKIN BOOSTERS HURT? It varies, depending on the treatment area you are having as some areas may be more sensitive than others. Some areas or the Profhilo treatment is very quick it is not really necessary to need anaesthetic numbing cream beforehand, but if you are particularly sensitive or going to have a whole face-full of tiny injections, I would probably suggest applying some numbing cream before we start. The needles used are very small and fine which keeps the discomfort to a minimum. You may feel a little sting as the injection goes in but it is very tolerable. ​ ​
